A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Chile, killing at least 214 people and causing widespread damage. Buildings and roads were destroyed, and electricity, water, and phone lines were cut off in many areas. Tsunamis generated by the earthquake swept ashore in other countries in the Pacific, but caused little damage. The earthquake was the largest to hit Chile in 50 years. Rescue efforts were hampered by collapsed bridges and structures. Aftershocks continued to cause damage, including collapsed buildings in Santiago. Many residents were left homeless after the disaster. Chile is vulnerable to large earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
